The Centre of Justice
Court in Action has teamed up with The Tales of Robin Hood to create a
Centre of Justice. Robin and his merry men took crime and justice into
their own hands to create a better living environment for the poor. With
Robin’s morals and example of justice, the program and attraction has
joined forces to create a fantastically educational and fun day out for
schools. Converting Tucks Tavern into a courtroom, the group can gain a
fun look into the comparisons of what was possible through law compared
to today. Still focusing on present crime rates and issues, the group
will enjoy the program in an alternate environment.
Magistrate Chris Slade set in place the programme, Court in Action for
young adults to help them understand the justice system in a more
realistic way. With reference to anti social behaviour and bullying,
using real life role playing narrative with roles found in a court – the
group can learn to distinguish between a right and wrong in relation to
crime and justice.
Chris says ‘‘the aim is to reduce anti social behaviour and bullying –
if young people truly understand the moral and legal obligation of their
choices and decisions against others, we can start to understand of
educational worth’’.
Chris has been a magistrate for 12 years as well as sitting in youth
court for a number of years. From these experiences he came away feeling
that if the education of law was there then crime within the younger
sector would reduce. He later became an appraiser and mentor to
magistrates – understanding the story from both sides as well as the
correct moral conceptual thinking. With backing and coverage from the
BBC as well as the Nottingham Evening Post, Court in Action has had
fantastic feedback and references. The evaluation of statistics show
that 98% said the session improved their perception and understanding of
the legal system, while 75% wanted a follow up session.
